General characteristics

The Vaccarèse grape variety is also referred to as Camarèse or Brun Argenté (“silvery brown”). Its clusters are of medium size, cylindrical in shape and compact. The berries, too, are of medium size, perfectly round and blackish blue in colour.

Wine-making potential

Vaccarèse grapes are rarely vinified unblended. They are used to “refine” the taste of Grenache Gris, famous for its headstrong character. The distinguishing characteristic of Vaccarèse is its unusual aromatic quality, lending style and rustic simplicity when included in the blend. Its unique floral notes give the resulting wine an elegant flavour of great freshness.

Use

Vaccarèse is one of the grape varieties that must be used in wines aspiring to the Châteauneuf du Pape and Côtes du Rhône Villages AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) appellations. It is a straightforward secondary ingredient in the composition of Côtes du Rhône wines from both the northern (Septentionales) and southern (Méridionales) growing areas.
